The Publication
Once the directors realized that the Century Boat Club would grow into such a widespread organization, they decided to publish a quarterly newsletter to educate and inform the members. The first newsletter was printed in April of 1980.That issue was a four-page leaflet with photos, stories, and classified ads. Soon thereafter, it established itself as the heart of the organization.
Today it is a 32-page newsmagazine called the Thoroughbred and is filled with timely and worthwhile articles submitted by the membership and various wooden boat experts.
Standard in every issue are articles covering current club activities, letters to the editors, membership news, and a President’s Message. Other articles covering restoration techniques, proper equipment, hardware, and maintenance along with feature articles on topics ranging from the history of a particular boat to members’ unique restoration experiences. A highlight of all newsletters are the stories from the members and the photos of their boats.
The Thoroughbred also includes articles and photos of both CBC-sponsored and other antique and classic boat shows, depending on attendees’ and show chairmen reports.
Finally, every issue of the Thoroughbred contains the “Horse Trader” section, a multiple-page classified listing, and includes categories of Century boats for sale and wanted, other boats for sale, hardware wanted and for sale, and miscellaneous items wanted and for sale. Every member can submit one three-line ad per issue for no charge.
